Does anyone remember the movie 1984 based on the George Orwell novel?
In the film, the protagonist is tortured until he believes--truly believes--that "two plus two equals five. Two plus two has always equaled five".
I bring this up because I recently had a conversation with the administrator of another blog who asserts that two plus two does in fact equal five. He even provided a link for me to follow which presumably backed up his claim.
I didn't follow the link.
His playful--I guess...I hope-- belief would be comical but for the fact that it points up a disturbing trend.
There is a creeping, low grade insanity that has become all too common, and accepted, in devoloped countries like The United States. I'm referring to an ability on the part of some to twist and contort reality in order to make it comport with belief systems which can't be supported by the facts as they exist.
We see this same low grade insanity in the millions--not one or two-- who sincerely believe that 9/11 was perpetrated by the United States government, George Bush specifically. All appeals to reason are a waste of time. I've found out from experience that trying to have a reasonable discussion with such people is like trying to talk sense to a drunk. usually a mean drunk.
Over the holidays, I had a conversation with a woman who is dead certain that George Bush and the Israelis orchestrated the events of September eleventh. This same woman--in all seriousness--believes that the entire state of Israel, could and should be removed to a remote island. She's not sure which island.
This same woman is a respected health care professional and as far as I know she holds a master's degree. Just as disturbing is the fact that other well educated professionals were present, and none took exception to her statements.
Another blogger, who has commented recently on this blog, seems to believe that, quite literally, The United States is a police state the exact equivalent of Hitler's Germany. I believe this person is also an educated professional.
There was a time when the tin foil hatters could be laughed off. They've now become a sizable voting block. I honestly don't think I'm overstating the case when I say these people are a threat to civilization.
I've brushed up against real insanity a few times, and I can tell you that even in small amounts, it's extremely poisonous.
I fear it.
You should fear it.
Unfortunately, a tsunami of crazy making appears to be headed our way. If it isn't stopped I'm afraid we're in for a disaster.
If nothing else, history has shown that an avalanche of craziness, apathy and stupidity like the one we're currently experiencing, inevitably leads to tragedy, death and human enslavement on a massive scale. Absolute proof of this can be seen in Nazi Germany, the former Soviet Union, and Rawanda to name a few.
For one hundred years, our country has functioned as a levy on which waves of human insanity break, lose there energy, then cascade back into the sea. What will happen to our world if The United States can no longer fulfill that function?
What will happen if we lose our way?
I understand that if we begin identifying others as literally insane, we may be opening a pandora's box. But I don't believe fear of consequences or political correctness should prevent us from calling these people out with the "C" word when it's absolutely appropriate and necessary.
Crazy is as crazy does.

PS. One basic tenet of leftist strategy involves ownership of mental health criteria.
Leftists believe that if they can control the criteria by which soundness of mind is established, they can render their opposition irrelevant by having them declared--you guessed it--insane.
If I get really ambitious, I'll explore this in my next post. You can explore it now by clicking on the link to your right titled The Russian Textbook on Psychopolitics.
